The Turkestan Desert is a cold desert. This means that even though there is little precipitation in deserts, cold deserts have less evaporation then a hot desert.
And keep in mind that if you are going to the Turkestan Desert in the winter, (or any cold desert) that they have colder winters, but they do have hotter summers then hot deserts, which have mild temperatures.

Cold Deserts Facts:
- Large amounts of snowfall in the winter
- A high average of rainfall of 15 -26 cm which is mainly in April and May or autumn, depending on the area
- Short, wet summers about 21 - 26ºC
- Winters temperatures range from about -2 to 4ºC
- Heavy soil, with lots of salt and silt in it
- Good drainage in the soil to leach out most of the salt
